Sometimes, the best way to learn from the Tour professionals is to take a moment and consider that these players are the best in the world. Sounds simple, but really, we all forget that from time to time.

I've heard it described that the difference between a professional and an amateur golfer is that the amateur makes a shot of skill look spectacular while the professional makes it look routine. That makes a lot of sense.

Consider the one area of golf that we can theoretically do as well as Tour players: Putting. There is no great feat of physical strength or incredible dexterity needed to putt. In fact, all golfers have made a long putt before, just like the Tour players we see every week.

As I watched the Northern Trust Open at Riviera Country Club, it was obvious to me that there IS a difference. These guys on TV are unbelievable! In fact, now that the PGA Tour literally measures each and every shot by laser, the Shotlink System shows exactly how amazing these guys are -- as they go about making it look routine.

Consider Phil Mickelson on the final hole of regulation. Even CBS's Jim Nantz warned his birdie attempt was a length of putt "not holed very often." But from 26'9", Mickelson made the tough putt and earned his way into the playoff. This was reminiscent of the putts he made last week at Pebble Beach when he went on to win. Then on the second playoff hole, Bill Haas drains one from 45 feet! Stats show Mickelson's putt had a 9% liklihood of going in based on Tour statistics. Haas' putt had a 3% chance of going in. This is against the Tour average. Big-time players come up big when it matters!

Now for the rest of the golf world. Instead of looking at the putts made, consider the putts missed! 91% of Tour players miss from Mickelson's distance, 97% miss from Haas' distance. So what are the odds you'll make these?

I like to stress to amateur players that speed is critical in making you a better putter. One thing Tour players are great at on the greens is avoiding the three-putt. On average, they have about one every two rounds. If you work on your lag putting, get the ball to tap-in distance from anything more than 10 feet and your scores will drop.

On TV, we see highlights of long bombs dropping on the greens and great saves or birdies pouring in from all over. But that's not the reality. Not even for the world's best. They know the secret to good scores is not necessarily making the long putts, it's making good long putts that leave you with "gimme" tap-ins instead of grinding over 3- or 4-footers for par.

Work on your lag putting skills for awhile, your scores will reflect it very soon.

Tampa Bay’s Premier PGA TOUR’s Champions Tour Golf Tournament Returns As Tampa Bay Pro-Am

2012 Event To Be Hosted By Tampa Bay Lightning

TAMPA, FLA., December 29, 2011 – Today the Tampa Bay Pro-Am Foundation, Inc. has announced that the event formerly known as the Outback Steakhouse Pro-Am, the premier Champions Tour event, is returning in 2012 with the new name Tampa Bay Pro-Am. In addition, Tampa Bay Lightning have been added as host of the 2012 golf tournament. This partnership, born out of a mutual commitment to serving the Tampa Bay community, will join together two professional sports properties in the area, officially making it the Tampa Bay Pro-Am hosted by Tampa Bay Lightning. Through this co-promotional marketing partnership Tampa Bay Lightning Day will be added to the schedule of events, as well as, free grounds admission will be offered to Tampa Bay Lightning season ticket holders. The 2012 Tampa Bay Pro-Am hosted by Tampa Bay Lightning celebrates the tournament’s 25^th year of existence, April 9-15, at TPC Tampa Bay.

“We are committed to keeping this prestigious Champions Tour event in the Tampa Bay market and continuing our legacy of giving to our charitable causes each year,” said Chris Sullivan, Outback Steakhouse Co-Founder and 2012 Tournament Co-Chairman. “Through the support of the Tampa Bay Lightning, PGA TOUR, our key community sponsors, and the strong community effort, we are excited to be moving forward in 2012 with a new name, but the same exceptional event,” concluded Sullivan.

            “We are proud to be partnering with one of Tampa Bay’s most prestigious and visible


 events,” said Tampa Bay Lightning Chairman and Governor, Jeff Vinik. “This event has 


contributed a tremendous amount of physical resources and exposure to some of the area’s


 best charities and we look forward to helping elevate the event so that even more can be 


done for the good of the Tampa Bay community.”

“The Tampa Bay area has continued to produce one of the most thriving and unique experiences on the Champions Tour. Our professionals look forward to playing in this event and city each year. We are excited to be coming back here in 2012 and we look forward to continued success in the Tampa Bay market with the Tampa Bay Pro-Am,” said Champions Tour President Mike Stevens.

Tournament officials are still seeking a title sponsor for the 2012 event and beyond, however, through additional support from Tampa Bay Lightning, Tampa Bay & Company, and existing sponsors, the tournament will kick off its 25^th year in the Tampa Bay area. As it moves forward without a title sponsor, the event is looking for support from the entire Tampa Bay community to insure its continued success and longevity.

“Tampa Bay & Company and the Pro-Am have been longtime partners,” said Tampa Bay & Company CEO, Paul Catoe. “Taking our involvement to the next level is a great opportunity to highlight and promote our great destination. The Tampa Bay Pro-Am is just one more reason that Tampa Bay continues to be the premier destination for visitors.”

“The Pro-Am will carry on the reputation of providing the best hospitality, fan interaction and party atmosphere on the Champions Tour,” said Amy Hawk, tournament director of the Tampa Bay Pro-Am hosted by Tampa Bay Lightning. “Spectators’ will continue to feast on food from the various OSI Restaurant Partners, LLC concepts (Outback Steakhouse, Carrabba’s Italian Grill, Bonefish Grill), as well as, Lee Roy Selmon’s. We will work hard to continue the tradition of hosting high profile celebrities and the best professional golfers on the Champions Tour in Tampa this April,” concluded Hawk.

Celebrities scheduled to appear include Ronde’ Barber, Derrick Brooks, Craig T. Nelson, Joe Theismann, and Lightning Founder Phil Esposito, who will also serve as the Honorary Chairman of the event in 2012.

About the Tampa Bay Pro-Am & Tournament Format

The Tampa Bay Pro-Am won the 2010 Tournament Business Affairs Award. The Champions Tour Tournament Business Affairs department rates and grades several different categories that determine what makes a successful event, and the Tampa Bay Pro-Am, played for the 19^th consecutive year at TPC Tampa Bay in Lutz, Florida, earned the highest overall score.

The Tampa Bay Pro-Am golf tournament has contributed over $9 million to Tampa Bay area charities since its inception 24 years ago. The 2011 recipients were the Special Operations Warrior Foundation and Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research (with contributions going to the Parkinson’s Progression Markers Initiative at University of South Florida).

The Tampa Bay Pro-Am Foundation, Inc. is a 501(c)(3) not for profit organization founded in October of 2003.

About the Tampa Bay Lightning

The 2004 Stanley Cup Champion Tampa Bay Lightning was purchased by Jeffrey Vinik in March, 2010. Upon purchasing the Lightning, Vinik pledged to make the organization world class and he has delivered on that promise, hiring Hockey Hall of Famer Steve Yzerman to be Vice President and General Manager and lauded industry veteran Tod Leiweke to be Chief Executive Officer. About the Champions Tour

Collectively, the Champions Tour has the most recognizable and accomplished players in the game with many of its 29 members of the World Golf Hall of Fame competing regularly in its events and numerous other major championship winners among its members. The Champions Tour is a membership organization of professional golfers age 50 and older. Conceived in 1980 as the Senior PGA Tour, it started with just four events and purses totaling $475,000. BATTLE AT THE BABE

Tampa, FL...December 1, 2011... Former PGA Tour member and current Champions Tour members, Gary Koch and Jim Dent, will take on T.J. Heidel, head golf pro at Rogers Park Golf Course, and Brad Brunner, the current record holder at Babe Zaharias Golf Course, at this year’s Battle at the Babe. Last year’s exciting 18-hole skins game will become a fourball stoke play event on December 27, 2011.

Gary Koch got his first taste of competitive golf in 1970 when he won the USGA Junior Amateur Championship in 1970. He has six career PGA Tour victories with the last one in 1988 at the Panasonic-Las Vegas Invitational. Currently, he is active in golf course design with his company, Robbins/Koch Golf Designs, Inc., and lead golf analyst for the Golf Channel and NBC Sports.

Jim Dent, a permanent resident of Tampa for over 30 years, has collected 12 victories and $9.5 million in prize money from his 22 years on the Champions Tour and 20 years on the PGA Tour. He holds the honor of winning the first Long Drive Championship in 1974 and was inducted into the Georgia Sports Hall of Fame, where he is originally from.

T.J. Heidel began his career with the Tampa Sports Authority in 1995, eventually becoming head golf pro in 2008 at Babe Zaharias Golf Course, where he first learned the game. Heidel currently is the head golf pro at Rogers Park Golf Course, another Tampa Sports Authority managed course. He was the previous record holder at Babe Zaharias Golf Course with a score of 60.

Brad Brunner earned First Team all county honors for 4 years while playing at Chamberlain High school and was the Hillsborough County Player of the Year. In 2010, he finished 3^rd place in the 2010 Florida State Amateur Championship. After a year of competition at UNF, Brunner had his first professional win at Rogers Park in 2011 at the Mid Winter Golf Classic.

On Tuesday, December 27, 2011 at 10 a.m. Koch, Dent, Heidel and Brunner will square off at Babe Zaharias Golf Course for the 18-hole contest. The cost is $10.00 per ticket for spectators and will permit walking only. Sponsorships start at $100. Contact John Reger at jreger@tampasportsauthority.com for more information.

Professional Win by Blanchet and Reger at the Ronald McDonald House Pro Am hosted by Gator Basketball Coach Amanda Butler

Christian Blanchet began his career as a professional golfer in the Ronald McDonald House Charity Pro-Am on Friday June 10th. The Pro Am was held to raise money for the families of critically ill children staying at medical facilities in North-Central Florida. He teamed with tournament sponsors Burkhardt Distributors and BE&K Building Group. Additionally, he was paired with North Florida PGA President, John Reger, Jr., as they won the Professional Division.

This was an amazing round of golf with three birdies in the first four holes and then two more birdies and a HOLE in ONE (ACE) on the 175 yrd, par 3, eighth hole finishing with a 29 on the front side. Coupled with a solid 33 on the back, a 62 for his first time out as a professional golfer, it was a very successful debut!

LUTZ, Fla. (AP) -- John Cook won the Outback Steakhouse Pro-Am on Sunday for his second Champions Tour victory of the year, rebounding from a double bogey on the final hole of regulation with a birdie on the first hole of a playoff against Jay Don Blake. Cook, also the winner of the season-opening Mitsubishi Electric Championship in Hawaii, closed with a 2-over 73 to match Blake at 9-under 204. Blake birdied the final hole for a 70.

Cook hit his 175-yard approach shot into the water on the par-4 18th en route to the double bogey.

"We're not supposed to hit shots like that," Cook said. "It happens to the best of us. It's happened to everyone on the regular tour, on the Champions tour and it happened to me today."

He credited caddie Tommy Anderson for helping him regroup for the playoff on the same hole.

"Tommy has us stop when driving us down the fairway to the 18th tee so we could walk the rest of the way," Cook said. "Tommy said, 'OK, J.C., it's hole No. 1. Just refocus. Get back at it.'

"He really settled me down, and I give him a lot of credit for that. He stepped in when he needed to and that's why we've been together four years. ... I was still hot, and didn't know what to expect in the playoff, but luckily I got the chance to redeem myself."

In the playoff, Cook hit a 6-iron from 168 yards to about 6 feet to set up his winning birdie.

Blake's second shot out of a fairway bunker landed in the grenade rough.

Blake is winless since the PGA TOUR's Sheraton Lehman Brothers Open in 1991.

"All this builds confidence and builds positive results," Blake said. "Keep knocking at the door and some time that door is going to open pretty wide. So, that's what we keep practicing for, to try to make it happen."

The 53-year-old Cook earned $255,000 for his seventh career Champions Tour victory. He opened with rounds of 66 and 65 at TPC Tampa Bay to take a one-stroke lead into the final round.

Joe Ozaki (68) and Russ Cochran (74) tied for third at 7 under.

Congratulations to Tatiana Pineda from Bogata Columbia who won the 5th Annual National Junior Girls Invitational, March 19th0inh at the Country Club of Ocala. Her 36 Hole Score of 73-73=146 took home the Overall Title and 2 AJGA Exemptions.

We also would like to thank the Owners, Members, and Outstanding Staff of the Country Club of Ocala for their exceptional hospitality extended to our Junior Girls and their families.

Arnold Palmer Honored by North Florida PGA

Arnold Palmer was inducted on December 6, 2010 into the North Florida PGA Hall of Fame. The ceremonies were hosted by Kraig Kann of the Golf Channel and by John Reger, Jr., President of the North Florida PGA. Mr. Palmer is the first PGA TOUR Player to be inducted and said "it feels great to be just one of the boys". His father Deacon Palmer was a PGA Golf Professional in Pennsylvania.
